Our early November news belch . . .

Hard on the heels of our last news outpouring, we have another dribble for you 🙂

Bite sized chunks and all that.

Dynaudio Contour Legacy 2024

We will understand if you’re getting a whiff of deja vu here. We have mentioned these speakers before. They were shown at the Munich High End show in May this year. Slightly bizarrely, the launch was booked for 29th October and we were asked to keep them a secret until then. Despite appearing on hi-fi dealer websites over the course of the summer, most references were promptly deleted to allow for the launch.

Given that these look like a carbon copy of the Contour 1.8 MkII from the mid 1990’s, all this secrecy seems a little pointless. Either way, we can now talk about them and ‘admit’ that we actually have our demonstration set on site.

In the manner of the limited edition Heritage specials from a year or two ago, these are beautifully finished products in sustainable American Walnut veneer. The whole design and manufacturing process takes place in Skanderborg, Denmark and they sound really, really good.

Early reviews have been effusive, although at least one of them mentioned that they were already sold out. This may be true from Dynaudio’s perspective but dealers, such as ourselves, who have committed to buying them in anticipation of demand still being there, see them as very much available. Mind you, with the total production run this time being just 1000 units of which just 50 are destined for the UK we will hopefully see them flow through to end users as they come into stock over the coming months.

For reference, the last ‘Heritage Special’ production run was 2500 units and they didn’t sit on shelves for all that long.

Dynaudio have certainly pulled out all the stops on these with all of the content being properly high end:

The Esotar 3 tweeter is from the Confidence series but dressed to look like the original Contour version.

The bass drivers are based on those used in the ultra high end Evidence series (technically above Confidence level) but actually unique to this particular model.

The crossovers are exceedingly highly specified, using high end Mundorf and Duelund parts.

The first thing is to have a listen and demonstrations are something we are very happy to arrange.

This year’s Linn winter promotion is refreshingly straightforward:

Trade-In any turntable with us between 1st November 2024 and 31st January 2025 and save at least £750 off a Linn Majik LP12.

The offer applies to all variants of the Majik LP12:

  • Standard plinth with Moving Magnet cartridge (Adikt)
  • Standard plinth with Moving Coil cartridge (Koil)
  • Fluted plinth with Moving Magnet cartridge (Adikt)
  • Fluted plinth with Moving Coil cartridge (Koil)
Tangerine Audio’s latest product, the Revolver, is a machined stainless steel platter for the Linn LP12 and we now have some stock. Let’s quote Tangerine audio themselves:

“Machined from a single billet of high grade austenitic (non magnetic) stainless steel.Revolver weighs 2.574KG and will not require a reset to the suspension. Linn platters vary a bit in weight but mine is 2.542. Revolver is a straight forward swap over upgrade.

The inner diameter remains the same ensuring compatibility with both Radikal and Lingo 4 sensor pick ups.The primary benefit is even weight distribution which allows the stylus to track the groove at optimum level. Unlike a cast platter there is no porosity (gaps or air pockets, think honeycomb bar). Porosity has a detrimental effect causing the platter to be unbalanced. Revolver is not subject to these compromises.

The manufacturing process will ensure each unit is within a very fine tolerance of 0.10mm and beautifully finished in natural silver. ”

Reactions amongst the Linn chatteratti have been very positive. One of our customers is already well and truly over the Moon with his, although we do hope to see him again at some point.

New(s) from QUAD

Not all that long after we moved Signals into St Cecilia’s House, we realised that there were quite a few Eastern Audio customers out there with aging QUAD equipment and many of them still had a very strong allegiance to this iconic brand.

The most recent QUAD design, the Artera pre amp is something of a star and, along with the Artera power amplifier, it represents impressive value for money. Over the past few years, though, we’ve seen the interest in QUAD gently dwindle whilst the newer products from sister brand Audiolab have held wider appeal.

And then this ‘reimagining’ of the 33 preamp and 303 power amp comes along and we simply have to get one! It’s due with us on the 15th of November and we’re just a little bit excited.

What, with the resolutely retro Naim Nait 50, these ‘heritage series’ Dynaudios and now this. Old is quite clearly becoming cool.

and finally . .  St Cecilia’s day Jazz

Join us to celebrate St Cecilia’s Day Friday 22nd November 2024.

Come along to hear some classic Jazz on high quality audio equipment. To quote the Eventbrite AI assistant, “join us for an afternoon of smooth tunes and good vibes” it’ll probably just be Jazz, though, at Signals HiFi. Peter Davies, who hosted our previous Jazz event will be back in the chair.

As ever, it’s free and could conceivably be fun! Free refreshments too, naturally.
