ATC SCM 50 ASL Active loudspeakers.
These were our original demonstration examples of the SCM50 purchased after we moved home and business location from Martlesham to Bucklesham. They were sold to a customer in North Suffolk around 2003/4 and we have just taken them in against a far newer pair of ATC Active 50 towers.
They are in Burr Oak veneer. Condition is ‘interesting’ in that long term exposure to sunlight seems to have cracked the lacquer quite significantly. Let’s call it patina of age. They actually look perfectly fine from a pace or two away and even when you spot the added texture, it’s somehow alright too.
They are in good working order, though, with all aspects functioning as they should. A visit to the one and only owner by an ATC engineer some years ago led to the treble amplifier being backed off by about 1.5 Db to tame some of the perceived brightness in what was a fairly lightly furnished room. I always found the quite bright sounding too, so I quite like the adjustment. It can be reversed.
Technically, every single driver in the current model is now different and had, (a) the cabinet condition been more like new and (b) the timeframe for getting them serviced and updated less extended, we might have done this.
It does seem a little wasteful to throw away perfectly functional tweeters, dome mid-range and bass drivers simply to make them utterly current in any case.
Even the stands, which didn’t have spikes back then, are a bit battered. Once they’re under the speakers, they still look fine.
So here’s the deal: 25 year old speakers that have led a life and still have much to give in perfectly tidy and usable condition. They could make for a restoration project or you could keep them just as they are.

Spend some time on eBay and you will see how reasonable these figures are, particularly given the provenance.

Overview
The SCM50 ASL (active) and SCM50 SL (passive) are designed to perform at their best in the recording studio or at home with the finest quality hi-fi equipment.
The monitors’ ability to reproduce music and speech with phenomenal accuracy, transparency and dynamics lies mainly in the SM75-150S soft dome midrange driver.
Each drive unit in the active model has its own dedicated and individually matched MOS-FET amplifier, while the 234mm/9″ bass driver incorporates ATC’s unique Super Linear Magnet technology. Our active crossover network consists of a wide band-width, electronically balanced input stage with high common mode rejection and very low distortion.
Like the HF, mid and bass drivers, all electronics are designed and manufactured in-house to create a no-compromise active system. In passive form, the SCM50 SL provides broad and symmetrical dispersion, excellent amplitude and phase characteristics throughout the frequency range.
Speakers are supplied with stands and fabric wrapped grills.
