Description

Naim ovator s-600Naim Ovator S-600

These passive loudspeakers were originally our demonstration examples and date to around 2010. They were supplied by us to a local non-smoking customer in 2012 and have remained with him until now, when the plan is to downsize the house and listening room. Condition is first rate.

All the original packaging is present and correct too.

These come with the ‘skateboard’ delivery devices on which they enter and exit their rather clever packaging.  Once you have rolled them out of the boxes, you wheel these into position and then lower them onto the spikes.

Honestly, just add a sink plunger and you can have hours of fun 🙂

The suspension locking bolts for the BMR are not in place in the photographs but will be supplied, along with allen keys. They have the full set of packaging protection, so you can completely re-live the full Ovator experience.

Naim Ovator S-600 is a fairly ‘marmite’ product. In fairness, all Naim loudspeakers are, so you will find good and bad judgements of them on the wild wide web. For sure, they are not small and, in most cases, will need some breathing space around them. They are also fairly heavy.

In recent years, these have acquired a cult status that eluded them when they were new. They have become recognised as excellent transducers that may well have been ahead of their time.

Price includes UK mainland carriage which will almost certainly need to be via a pallet service. If the distance is not too great, we can use the company van. We are also happy to demonstrate them here and strongly suggest that potential buyers have a listen first.

Price at the time of purchase was £6500. Latterly it was closer to £9000.

Speil:

The first of our Ovator range of loudspeakers, the S-600 was also the first high-end hi-fi loudspeaker to use the game-changing advantages of BMR drive unit technology and it remains a reference product within its class. A larger and more powerful speaker than the S-400, it employs twin 200mm bass drivers for greater low-frequency extension in larger listening rooms. By using the same suspended enclosure technology in the larger S-800 model, its 85mm BMR is also isolated from undesirable resonances.

Features

  • Twin 200mm bass drivers and 85mm Balanced Mode Radiator (BMR)
  • Frequency response down to 28Hz, and up to 35kHz
  • Ultra-rigid multi-composite enclosure, strategically mass damped and internally sub-divided to provide optimum loading volumes for each drive unit
  • Decoupling leaf spring suspension between die-cast plinth and enclosure to avoid low-frequency colouration
  • Twin-spring decoupling suspension plus cylindrical aluminium enclosure to optimise BMR performance
  • Available in Ash and Rosewood

Performance- (was) upgradable via external crossover plus active amplification

Technology & Craft

The Ovator S-600’s balanced mode radiator (BMR) constitutes its most visible technological advance, yet the performance of this loudspeaker is equally the result of painstaking refinement in numerous elements of design, construction, and material selection.

For example, there is so much more to the musical reproduction of bass than low frequency extension, so the Ovator S-600 LF driver is designed not simply to play bass, but to do so with faultless musical accuracy. It incorporates a multitude of electro-acoustic details aimed at minimising distortion and compression, and the result is extended bass with peerless timing, dynamics, and pitch accuracy.

The Ovator S-600 crossover network is housed within the plinth and divides the audio signal between bass drivers and BMR with fourth order acoustic slopes at 380Hz. Each component selection is the result of intense technical analysis and listening, and the component arrangement is fundamentally informed by the layout and earthing techniques developed for Naim Audio power amplifiers. A crossover module suspension system and individual component decoupling ensures any chance of microphony is minimised. Conversion to either bi-amp or tri-amp active drive is easily achieved through removal of the crossover module.
