Description

Excellent pair of very fine loudspeakers.  These SBLs have been in the hands of the last non-smoking owner since 1987. S/N 037223. With separate cross-over modules which fit onto the cabinets, these can be used, with the right ancilleries, in either active or passive mode. They are the classic ‘boundary’ design, which work best with their back very close to (solid) room boundaries.

These were built as Mk1 SBLs but had Mk2 drivers fitted some time ago.

Overall condition is pretty good with one speaker having acquired fewer chips than the other. Having said that, given their age, they’ve done pretty well.

One aspect that had failed was the original foam grilles, which were crumbling away. As you can see, we’ve bought some nice fresh ones and these are included in the sale.

They come in the original packaging (also in really good condition) along with an installation gasket kit, including the alloy pads for the spike to sit against.  An unopened tube of Loctite sealant came with them, but it is a few years past its best by date. No promises on that!

Price includes UK mainland shipping. If you can collect (and, of course inspect), the price comes down by £35 to a round £400.

Let’s quote Google AI:

The Naim SBL stands for Separate Box Loudspeaker, a classic two-way dynamic floorstanding speaker system known for its involving and fast sound presentation. It was designed by the British company Naim Audio to be easy to site and drive in real-life listening rooms. Key Features and Specifications

  • Design: The SBL is constructed from three separate cabinets assembled onto an integral stand. This design isolates each drive unit and allows for extended low frequency performance while maintaining cabinet rigidity.
  • Upgradability: A key feature is the external crossover which can be easily removed, making it possible to upgrade from passive to active operation (bi-amping or tri-amping using multiple amplifiers and an active crossover like the Naim NAXO 2/4) without changing the speakers themselves.
  • Setup: Proper installation involves a unique sealing process using silicone sealant between the mid-bass and bass-loading cabinets, which is critical for achieving the intended tight bass performance.

Reviews and User ExperienceUser and expert opinions on the Naim SBL are varied, often described as a “marmite” (love it or hate it) speaker, but many value its specific strengths.

  • Sound Quality: According to reviewers, when set up correctly and paired with appropriate amplification, the SBLs “sing”. They are often described as fast, involving, and fun to listen to.
  • Bass Performance: The SBL is noted for its fast and tight bass, though some point out it doesn’t reach the “subwoofer levels” of other large speakers. Its unique acoustic resistance unit helps control the bass loading.
  • Set-up Sensitivity: A common point in forums is the critical nature of the SBL’s setup. Many instances of poor sound are attributed to incorrect installation, particularly the sealant and positioning against a wall.
  • Durability and Build: Reviewers note the solid build quality, with some units having been in use for many years and still performing well when maintained (e.g., re-sealing the boxes).

The Naim SBL is a classic and highly regarded vintage speaker in the hi-fi community, known for its distinct engineering approach and high-performance potential when properly implemented within a quality system. It is primarily available on the used market. These reviews and product details explain the setup, sound, and performance of Naim SBL speakers:
